Survey: Dutch Travelers Have Crete at Top of 2024 Bucket List

The Greek island of Crete was chosen by Dutch travelers as their favorite destination in Greece for 2024, according to an online survey conducted by Griekenland.net, a website offering information and holiday tips about Greece’s islands and mainland.

Griekenland.net invited its readers to choose where in Greece they would like to visit in 2024 from a list of 17 popular destinations. Attracting 1,116 voters, the survey saw Crete receiving the majority of the votes (16 percent), followed by Samos (10 percent), Corfu (10 percent), Zakynthos (9 percent) and Kefalonia (8 percent).

“Just like in previous years, Crete is the undisputed favorite for Dutch people for their holidays in Greece,” Bas Wanrooij from Griekenland.net said in an announcement.

According to Wanrooij, seaside resorts and villages east of Heraklion, such as Malia, Stalida and Hersonissos, are popular places to stay on Crete. Moreover, while Heraklion has the island’s busiest airport, the Dutch can also fly to Chania in western Crete.

“Not only is Chania a beautiful city to visit, but you can easily explore the western side of Crete from here with beaches like Balos and Elafonisi,” Wanrooij said.

The second destination of choice for the Dutch for a holiday in 2024 is Samos. According to the survey, the North Aegean island is attractive to Dutch people due to its “pleasant coastal towns such as Kokkari and Pythagorio” and the fact that it is a hiking destination.

The Ionian Islands also attract the Dutch

The Ionian Islands, which lie off the west coast of Greece, are also popular for the summer of 2024.

According to the survey, Corfu seems to have made a comeback with its beautiful capital town Kerkyra, thousands of olive trees and charming coastal villages.

Zakynthos is also popular in The Netherlands and has been attracting tons of tourists for years with, for example, it’s famous Navagio (shipwreck) beach.

“Unfortunately you can no longer get on the beach itself as the white pebble beach with its high rocks is protected. You can still enjoy the fantastic view of Navagio bay from above,” Wanrooij said.

Kefalonia, the largest island of the group, closes the top 5 holiday destinations in Greece for 2024 from Griekenland.net’s survey.

Lefkada is also popular and is found in seventh place.
