According to the findings,15 percent of those polled said they plan to take more holidays in 2024, 11 percent said they had been saving up to afford a bigger holiday, and 10 percent said they will be taking advantage of travel deals in sales this month. As for destinations, of those polled, 12 percent named Greece as a top choice, 47 percent selected the UK, and 24 percent Spain. Beach holidays are once again the most popular trips being booked (44 percent), followed by city breaks (37 percent), and adventure holidays (12 percent). Indicative of the trend, Barclays consumer card spending data showed December spending on non-essential items increased by 2.3 percent, transactions with travel agents rose by 18.7 percent and with airlines by 25.9 percent. “We saw inflation fall significantly at the end of 2023, and we expect it to fall further in the opening months of 2024. This puts more spending power in the pockets of UK consumers and should help support them to continue to spend, even against the tough backdrop of weak economic growth,” said Jack Meaning, chief UK economist at Barclays. The UK is a main source market for Greece the Halkidiki peninsula in northern Greece expecting to see an increase this year in British travelers.
