The seaplane ports of three Greek islets in the Diapontian Island complex, northwest of Corfu, in the Ionian Sea, received approval this week, announced one of the project’s main investors Greek Water Airports.

According to the company’s statement, the seaplane ports of Othoni, Ereikoussa and Mathraki were approved by the Hellenic Navy General Staff and the Shipping Ministry on the initiative of the Corfu Port Authority.

Greek Water Airports was appointed as contractor of the project. So far the seaplane ports of Corfu, Paxi and Patra have received licensing while permits for the ports of Kanistro (Kassandra, Halkidiki), Porto Heli, Ermioni, Lavrio, Kissamos (Chania, Crete), and Kea are in the evaluation process.

To move forward with the project, the Corfu Port Authority and Greek Water Airports set up “North Ionian Waterways” which will be the operator of the Corfu, Paxi and Diapontian Islands waterways.

“The approval of the Diapontian Islands seaplane ports paves the way for the development of quality tourism which support the local economy on Ereikousa, Othoni and Mathraki,” said Greek Water Airports Founder and Managing Director Anastasios Govas.

He went on to add that the licensing of the ports will make it possible to carry out regular itineraries without limiting the number of flights per day, covering the transport needs of permanent residents all year round towards Corfu initially and then to other regional centers including Igoumenitsa, Ioannina, and Patra.

Last December, investor Hellenic Seaplanes announced that the first seaplane flights were scheduled to kick off from Corfu in the spring carrying out flights for transport, charters and sightseeing tours. Flights from Corfu will initially make stops at Paxi, Antipaxi and the Diapontian Islands.
