Greece managed to surpass many rival markets in the EU during the July-September period under review, which saw guests spend 309.4 million nights in short-term rental accommodation booked via Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group or TripAdvisor. Overall in the EU, overnight stays increased by 13.4 percent over the same quarter in 2022. In the nine-month period to September 2023, Airbnb-style rentals in Greece hosted 32 million overnight stays with the strongest demand recorded in peak summer months: August, which accounted for 8.9 million stays and July for 8.4 million stays. Reflecting a longer tourism season, the number of overnight stays at short-term tourist rentals in September reached 5.3 million and 4.1 million in June. Source of data: Eurostat In the EU, demand for short stays exceeded pre-pandemic 2019 levels and set new monthly records. In July, 115.7 million nights were spent in accommodation booked online, up by 10.7 percent over July 2022. In August, night stays rose to 124.7 million nights up by 11.7 percent over August 2022, and in September, the figure came to 69.1 million up by 21.6 percent over the same month a year earlier. In the January-September 2023 period, guests spent more than 546.2 million nights in EU short-term rental accommodation booked online marking an 11.8 percent rise over 488.6 million nights in 2022 and a 28.9 percent increase over 423.7 million in 2019. At EU level, France and Spain have the lead in terms of total overnight stays in the third quarter of the summer with over 1/3 of the total.
