With Valentine’s Day on the way next month, the e-commerce platform used data from Tripadvisor and first ranked the top 10 destinations in terms of hotels, restaurants and tours and secondly the list was ranked up accounting for population size, searching for the best place with smaller crowds. For the first list, the results have revealed the top ten capital cities with the best restaurants, 5-star hotels and romantic activities for couples. London ranked as the top Valentine’s Day destination for the best date followed by Paris, Lisbon, Amsterdam and Prague. Athens ranked sixth, with 755 fine dining restaurants, 26 hotels rated 5 stars and 31 romantic tours, adding to a combined score of 812. What makes Athens so romantic? In its description of what makes Athens so romantic, Ubuy Germany said the Greek capital ranks among the Top 10 European cities for the perfect Valentine’s date as it combines beautiful natural scenery and a thriving city with historical sights and tours around the city. According to Ubuy Germany, couples in Athens can choose between a plethora of activities, including a sunset yacht cruise and an evening tour to see the Parthenon lit up at night. Top 10 cities ranked by capita However, when Ubuy Germany looks at the top 10 taking the population into account, the order of the cities completely changes. London is no longer at the top despite it’s numerous attractions and drops to 9th place while Lisbon takes its place as the best city to be at on Valentine’s Day. The Portuguese capital is the winner in this category, with the best ratio of romantic activities per person. At the same time, Athens leaves the sixth place to climb to the second, leaving behind Paris, Prague, Madrid, Rome, Budapest, Berlin and Amsterdam. Ubuy counted the number of hotels rated 5 stars, the number of results that come up tagged ‘romantic tour’ on TripAdvisor, and the number of fine dining restaurants and added them up to create a total. Afterwards, the top 10 list was then ranked again counting each city’s total score by its population to work out its score per capita.
