More specifically, under the program titled “Heritage Trails of Skiathos”, the municipality in collaboration with Paths of Greece and Diadrasis, will improve the island’s trails, incorporate cultural and natural heritage elements, improve accessibility, and protect the island’s ecosystem as part of its strategy towards a more environmentally-friendly tourism model. Key actions include: researching and recording the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of Skiathos and documenting the history of the island from locals; improving the existing path network through the development of bicycle routes; signposting and examining the possibility of accessibility for the disabled; educating the local community and raising awareness about the need to maintain the paths in order to ensure the continuity and sustainability of the project; and promoting the project through the upgrade of the Skiathos trails website and via parallel open events. Late last year, British newspaper “The Times” placed Skiathos on its list of “15 Best Greek Islands to Visit in 2024” for its “forest-backed beaches”.
