In view of the travel and tourism sector’s key role in supporting world economies, the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) issued a “Call to Action”, urging EU leaders and decision-makers to take actions that will modernize and enhance the industry.

WTTC President & CEO Julia Simpson visited Brussels ahead of the EU elections to outline the key areas of focus for the EU to promote the growth of the sector. The 2024 EU elections will take place June 6-9.

According to WTTC data, travel and tourism employs over 22 million people and contributes 1.4 trillion euros to the EU economy, set to reach 1.9 trillion euros by 2033 or one in every 10 euros.

The sector is also expected to create an additional 4 million new jobs by 2033 reaching a total of 26.4 million employed by the industry or one in eight jobs across the EU.

In view of the sector’s impact, the WTTC is urging the EU to carry out policy impact assessments on the implementation of relevant legislation, ensuring that the transition to a green and sustainable future is achievable and works hand in hand with the sector to reach net zero emissions targets.

“The travel and tourism sector is a key driver of economic growth in the EU and the measures within our call to action will ensure the sector continues to grow sustainably, attract new talent and prosper,” said WTTC President & CEO Julia Simpson.

The Call to Action encourages EU leaders to consider the role and commitments already made by the Travel & Tourism sector, so that any future environmental legislation complements, rather than hinders, the work already being undertaken.

“We urge the EU to adopt these recommendations for the benefit of businesses and travelers globally. As the sector modernizes and unlocks the digital transformation of travel, together with the European Union we can achieve unprecedented growth,” Simpson added.

According to the WTTC, the key areas of focus should include facilitating smooth, hassle-free cross-border travel; stimulating growth and creating more job opportunities; and accelerating the digitalization of the sector.
