SITES is a rating system that guides, evaluates and certifies a project’s sustainability in the planning, design, construction and management of landscapes and other outdoor spaces. Developed by Lamda Development, The Ellinikon Experience Park is the first project in the New Construction category with SITES certification in Europe. The Ellinikon Experience Park opened to the public just six months after the signing of the contract for the The Ellinikon project at the former Athens airport near Glyfada by LAMDA Development. Designed by the office of Greek landscape architect Thomas Doxiadis, the park is based on biodiversity enhancement, soil restoration, and the reuse and utilization of construction materials from the old Ellinikon airport in a way that connects nature with the area’s ecosystem. Spread over 75,000 square meters, the park is part of a larger metropolitan park that offers visitors, especially children, unique opportunities for activities. According to Lamda Development, 900 new trees and 80,000 low vegetation plants have been planted at The Ellinikon Experience Park. The company has focused on planting trees and plants that develop in the Mediterranean climate, with an emphasis on local varieties, which is usual for the Attica landscape. The Ellinikon Experience Park is open to all everyday from 9am to 10pm with free entrance. The park’s facilities include a water maze, forest playground, zen garden and an outdoor training space. The park also has spaces for hosting parties, events and festivals.
