Greek Airports See 8.9% Rise in January Passenger Traffic

Passenger traffic at all airports in Greece in January increased by 8.9 percent compared to the corresponding month of 2023, according to tentative data released by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority – HCAA / Hellenic Aviation Service Provider-ΗASP.

Last month, Greece’s airports, which include Athens International Airport (AIA), the 24 regional airports managed by the HCAA and the 14 regional airports run by Fraport Greece, handled a total of 2,406,801 passengers (international and domestic passenger arrivals and departures), marking a 8.9 percent increase compared to January 2023 (2,209,593 passengers).

Top 3 Greek airports

The three Greek airports with the largest increase in passenger traffic in January 2024 are Sitia Airport “Vitsentzos Kornaros”, Kozani Airport “Philippos” and Paros Airport.

In January, Sitia airport saw the largest increase of 62.7 percent, handling 2,250 passengers compared to 1,383 passengers in January 2023. Kozani airport followed with a 37.6 percent increase to 293 passengers (up from 213 passengers last year). The third Greek airport with the largest increase in passenger traffic in January was that on Paros with an increase of 32.3 percent, handling 7,721 passengers compared to 5,838 passengers in January 2023.

Flights

In terms of flights (domestic and international aircraft arrivals and departures), Greek airports in January saw 22,764 flights take place, compared to 22,328 flights in 2023.

It should be noted that Athens International Airport (AIA) entered 2024 with a new record of arrivals for January, surpassing one million passengers from abroad. Greece’s 14 regional airports under  Fraport management in January reported rising arrival figures, up by 7.4 percent compared to the same month a year ago.
