The Greek Culture Ministry announced this week after the approval of the Central Archaeological Council that it will change the lighting design of the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounio.

“The new lighting aims to highlight the volume, plasticity, and geometry of the monument from every possible vantage point and from a distance while simultaneously reducing light pollution,” said Culture Minister Lina Mendoni.

The ministry statement said the aim of the project is to “highlight the monument and its immediate environment, without interventions and alterations to its character”.

The current lighting design of the popular monument was implemented in 2004 as part of the Athens Olympic Games. According to the ministry, a lighting study will be carried out in two phases covering the temple of Poseidon and the fortress walls.

The project, which will also include the surrounding area, will be covered by RRF funds and will be completed by the summer, said Mendoni, and then be “open to Greek and international visitors, functional, attractive and accessible”.

The study will be carried out by award-winning light designer Eleftheria Deko who was behind the lighting of the 2004 Athens Olympics opening and closing ceremonies, the Acropolis, and the Agora Modiano in Thessaloniki, among others.

The Temple of Poseidon, believed to have been constructed in 700 BC, stands on Cape Sounion and is dedicated to the ancient Greek god of the sea Poseidon. It is one of the most popular archaeological sites and attractions on the Athenian Riviera.
