The country ranked third among the Top 10 based on the latest sales figures presented today by the German Travel Association (DRV) at ITB Berlin 2024. More specifically, Greece ranks third after Turkey, which is winning over families this year, and Spain with Majorca accounting for half of all sales which are up by 29 percent over 2023. According to DRV, the Top 10 holiday destinations this summer based on sales are Turkey, Spain, Greece, Egypt, Portugal, Italy, Tunisia, Bulgaria, the United Arab Emirates and Maldives. The best performing destinations based on the DRV report are Turkey, marking a 39 percent rise in sales compared to the year-ago period, Portugal (+36 percent), the UAE (+47 percent), and the US (+42 percent). According to the same findings, Eastern Mediterranean destinations are set to increase their share of sales from 36 percent to 44 percent for the coming summer compared to pre-pandemic 2019. “This demonstrates that despite the extreme weather last year, there is still very high demand for holiday regions in Greece and Turkey,” said DRV President Norbert Fiebig. Fiebig goes on to add that cruise travel is also winning over the Germans this year, with sales expected to increase by 41 percent compared to the year-ago period. Greece was also in the Top 5 destinations among Germans in 2023 remaining a favorite choice. Germany has traditionally been one of Greece’s top source markets. According to Bank of Greece data, in 2023, the number of inbound travellers to the country rose by 17.6 percent to 32.7 million (up from 27.8 million in 2022). Visitors from Germany were up by 9.5 percent to 4.7 million compared to 2022. GTP is attending ITB Berlin 2024. Updates can be found through our special ITB Berlin 2024 section.
