Greece’s new visa scheme which enables travelers from Turkey to visit 10 nearby Greek islands with a fast-track temporary visa is expected boost tourism figures and support island development.

Speaking to journalists during ITB Berlin last week, Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni clarified that the visa was temporary and the only exception to Schengen zone rules.

“This year will be special in relation to Turkey because the 10-island program concerning islands near the Turkish coast is expected to revitalize their development,” she said.

She went on to add that it was a “visa at the gate” program and not a visa-free regime. According to Kefalogianni, travelers from Turkey will receive a visa from the Greek authorities upon arrival to the listed islands. She stressed however that police inspections will be strict to avoid violations.
