United Airlines on Thursday announced the extension to its daily seasonal services from Athens International Airport (AIA) to New York/Newark and Washington D.C. for 2024, providing more travel options for travelers departing Greece.

The airline is starting its Athens to New York-Newark seasonal service a week earlier on March 31. The route will run until early December.

Flights from Athens to Washington D.C. will start three weeks earlier on April 15 and wrap up in late October.

“We are able to offer our customers in Greece the opportunity to book their next U.S. getaway even earlier this year,” said Thorsten Lettnin, United’s Director Sales Continental Europe, Middle East, Africa, India and Israel.

United’s seasonal service from Athens to New York/Newark and to Washington D.C. will be operated with Boeing 787-10 and Boeing 787-8 aircraft respectively.

New daily Athens-Chicago route in May

According to the airline, with these seasonal service extensions and the introduction of new daily seasonal service between Athens and Chicago O’Hare on May 24, United is increasing flights from Greece by nearly 25 percent for 2024.

“For summer 2024, United will operate its largest-ever transatlantic summer schedule and we look forward to launching our new direct service from Athens to Chicago O’Hare, enabling even greater travel choice and the possibility to connect onwards via our U.S. hubs to other destinations across the Americas,” Lettnin said.

United’s new upcoming seasonal service to Chicago O’Hare will be operated with Boeing 787-8 aircraft. Flights between Athens and Chicago will run until late August.

According to Ioanna Papadopoulou, AIA, Director, Communications & Marketing, from the start of 2024, the U.S. market has been demonstrating an impressive growth of almost 30 percent versus last year.

“It continuously tops the list of our most important and popular markets, with the vibrant Greek-American community playing a key role in this,” she said, adding that the airport pledges to stay fully “united” in supporting the airline’s growth plans to/from Athens.

United has been serving Greece with summer seasonal flights since 2016.

The airline for summer 2024 will fly nonstop from 38 transatlantic destinations. Its schedule will include new services from Faro to New York/Newark and Barcelona to San Francisco and the resumption of its seasonal Reykjavik-New York/Newark service.
