Photo source: Harbor Management Organization In efforts to accelerate the “green transition” of the shipping sector, the Greek Shipping Ministry announced that it would be channeling 24 million euros into port infrastructure upgrades in Souda, Crete and Stylida, mainland Greece. In this direction, Shipping Minister Christos Stylianidis signed an agreement with Panagiotis Stamboulidis, the authorized advisor of the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund-HRADF (known as TAIPED in Greek) this week. Under the deal, projects co-financed through RRF funds include: – the construction of a new passenger terminal at the port of Souda budgeted at 12.9 million euros and set to be completed by the end of 2025; – dredging works at the port of Stylida budgeted at 10 million euros and scheduled to finished by the end of 2025; – and the preparation of study and strategy for the gradual renewal of the country’s coastal shipping fleet with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions and accelerating the sector’s green transition budgeted at 1,233,180.00 euros to be finalized in the second quarter of 2025. “By upgrading of the ports of Souda and Stylida, a new chapter begins for Greek shipping. By strengthening our ports, we strengthen Greece’s position as a central shipping hub in the Mediterranean and beyond. This agreement is expected to enhance economic growth, create new jobs, and offer advanced services to our shipping community,” said Stylianidis. The minister went on to add that works on the port of Souda will create a logistics and infrastructure center able to handle large-scale military and commercial operations further strengthening the port’s critical role in the Mediterranean.
