The two-day event offered visitors the chance to learn more about Pieria and the region’s cuisine and culture with local stakeholders aiming to establish it as a yearly spring happening. The event, part of the GNTO’s “Flowering Routes – Lafcadio Hearn” program, promoted the cherry orchards of Kolindros and Rachi in Pieria. The goal, said the GNTO, is to create a sustainable tourism product which taps into nature and the cherry blossoms of spring supported by artistic, cultural, and gastronomy happenings. The Pieria mountains, she said, could evolve into an excellent mountain destination and the Elatochori ski resort also deserves to be upgraded. The initiative, said Gerekou, comes as part of government plans to extend the tourism season by offering cultural experiences, promoting new forms of tourism in mainland Greece, and increasing tourist spend.
