Greek Airline AEGEAN Invests in More Seats and New Routes

AEGEAN will be investing in more seats across its hubs this year on the back of a successful 2023, according to the Greek national carrier’s CEO, Dimitris Gerogiannis.

Speaking during AEGEAN’s recent general meeting of shareholders, Gerogiannis said the airline company it planning to increase available seats by 1.1 million in 2024 after handling 15.69 million passengers last year – 9.5 million from abroad.

In this direction it is aiming to increase seats by 7 percent from its hub in Athens and boost capacity from Thessaloniki.

Overall in 2024, AEGEAN will be making 19.5 million seats available out of its seven hubs connecting 47 countries through 249 routes.

So far in the first quarter of the year, Gerogiannis said AEGEAN handled 2.8 million passengers marking an 11 percent rise over Q1 2023 while offering 3.8 million seats up by 12 percent over the year-ago quarter.

In 2023, AEGEAN handled an additional 3.2 million passengers compared to the previous year marking a 26 percent increase. The company said it broke all records, offering 18.5 million seats – 3.1 million more seats over 2022. Overall, in 2023, AEGEAN offered 11.1 million seats on its international network.

Other investments this year include the creation of a new simulation and crew training center as well as four specially configured A321neo aircraft which will enable the company to introduce new long-haul routes to its roster, including destinations in the Gulf, Central Africa, and Asia in the next few years.

The airline also received 28 new aircraft and is expecting an additional 22 to be delivered in the 2024- 2028 period.
