Established in 1956 and revived in 1984, the Papaflessia athletics event plays a significant role in the development of sports and culture in the region. Organized by the Messinian Gymnastics Association 1888, the oldest and most historic sports association in Greece, the races are scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 12, at the Kalamata Municipality Stadium. To formalize the region’s commitment, governor, Dimitris Ptochos, recently met with the association’s president, Panagiotis Stasinopoulos, and signed a cooperation agreement. Photo source: Peloponnese Region During their meeting, Ptochos emphasized the significance of the event as an “annual meeting point” for renowned athletes from Greece and around the world, which has the potential to establish Peloponnese as a premier sports tourism destination. “It serves as a race that unites communities globally, promotes physical activity, and underscores the value of sports as a means of expression and development, while simultaneously bolstering sports tourism,” remarked the governor. On his part, Stasinopoulos encouraged citizens to embrace the event and support the efforts of the participants. However, it was noted on the sidelines of the discussion that additional similar initiatives aimed at promoting sports activities and enhancing existing athletic infrastructure are necessary. The event is also supported by the Municipality of Kalamata and the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS).
