New electric buses were added to the fleet of public bus company OSY SA and have started operating on the streets of Athens.

The new buses are part of the Greek Transport Ministry’s strategy to modernize public transport and reduce its energy footprint.

“Today is an important day for Athens’ urban transport,” Greek Transport Minister Christos Staikouras said on Friday after taking a ride on one of the new buses.

Forty-six out of a total of 140 new electric buses will initially serve citizens, with the number set to increase in the near future.

According to Staikouras, the renewal of urban transport aims to be more sustainable, with a reduced energy impact and fewer environmental consequences. Additionally, electric buses will make it easier for citizens with reduced mobility to use public transportation, improving their daily lives.

“The electric buses are on the streets of Athens, as the OSY administration and the political leadership of the ministry had promised,” the minister added.

Secretary General of Transport Ioannis Xifaras said the ministry aims to renew the entire bus fleet and expand its operations in the city.

On his part, OSY CEO Stefanos Ayiasoglou said Athens’ public transport, over the past year, has made several infrastructure improvements for the digital modernization of the company.

“OSY will serve the citizens of Athens as best as possible,” he added.
