A total of 1.67 million passengers went through Greece’s 14 regional airports in April marking a 2.8 percent rise over the same month a year ago and continuing the March dynamic, said managing company Fraport Greece this week.
More specifically, regional airport traffic in the first four months of the year increased by 7.6 percent to 3.7 million through the airports of Aktion, Chania, Corfu, Kavala, Kefalonia, Thessaloniki, Zakynthos, Kos, Mytilini, Mykonos, Rhodes, Samos, Santorini, and Skiathos, with domestic travel up by 8 percent and international arrivals up by 6.7 percent.
International inbound traffic in April alone, driven mainly by travelers from the UK and Germany, increased by 2.3 percent over the same month in 2023 to 1.09 million and domestic arrivals in April rose by 3.6 percent to 580,000.
Flight numbers in April grew by 4.3 percent over last year with the number of domestic flights up by 6.1 percent and international flights by 3 percent compared to the same month a year ago.
On the down side, six of Fraport’s 14 airports recorded declines in April, including those of Mykonos and Santorini (drop in international arrivals). The island of Kos also saw April traffic drop by 6.1 percent, Aktio (-8 percent), Kefalonia (-9.8 percent), and Chania on Crete (-2.8 percent).
Mykonos and Santorini marked a decline in international arrivals in April down by 12.1 percent and 3.6 percent, respectively.
The best-performing regional airport in April was Skiathos’ posting a 23.9 percent rise in traffic, followed by the airports of Kavala (+20.6 percent), Zakynthos (+15.5 percent), Santorini (+11.5 percent), Corfu (+8.1 percent), and Rhodes (+6.2 percent).
Thessaloniki airport also marked a 1.2 percent rise and welcomed the largest number of passengers.
