Better services, accessibility, environmentally friendly, and sustainable are the main benefits of 17 new electric buses added to Thessaloniki’s fleet, said Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Staikouras during the launch of services this week.

Thessaloniki added to its transport options 17 out of 110 new electric buses as part of the government’s drive to upgrade transport infrastructure across Greece.

Speaking at the event, Staikouras said with the addition of the new buses one-third of the city’s bus fleet is now new.

The minister went on to highlight the advantages of electric mobility which include accessibility thanks to ramps and special spaces, sustainability, upgraded services, increased route frequencies, and reduced emissions, among others.

Also attending the event and referring to the new buses, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said it was a government priority to ensure that all citizens enjoy equal access to public transport.

“We managed to meet the timetables and to deliver the first 17 out of 110 electric buses which will significantly renew the fleet,” he said, adding that the new buses “were just the beginning. Many more vehicles with anti-pollution technology are in the pipeline, set to gradually replace the entire older fleet in both Athens and Thessaloniki”.

Lastly, Staikouras also referred to the launch of metro operations in November. The Thessaloniki metro is set to serve some 313,000 commuters daily and ease traffic congestion in the city center.

“Thessaloniki is becoming friendlier to its residents and visitors, but also to the environment,” he said.
