These airports include Athens International Airport (AIA), the 24 regional airports managed by the HCAA/HASP and the 14 regional airports operated by Fraport Greece. According to data released by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) / Hellenic Aviation Service Provider (HASP), the total number of passengers in the first four months of 2024 reached 12,586,931, up from 11,223,043 in the same period in 2023. Of the 24 airports managed by the HCAA/HASP, Heraklion Airport on Crete handled the largest number of passengers in April 2024, with an increase in domestic passenger arrivals of 13.7 percent to 69,628, compared to April 2023 (61,240 passengers). In total, including both domestic and international passengers (departures and arrivals), Heraklion Airport handled 487,303 passengers in April this year, up from 468,324 passengers last year. In terms of flights (arrivals and departures of domestic and international aircraft) during the January-April period for all of the country’s 39 airports, the data showed 108,623 flights, an increase of 6.4 percent compared to 2023 (102,079 flights). Performance of Athens Airport, 14 regional airports During April 2024, passenger traffic at Athens Airport soared by 16.3 percent compared to April 2023, reaching 2.49 million passengers. Overall, during the first four months of 2024, the airport’s passenger traffic reached 7.7 million passengers, marking a 16.5 percent increase from 2023. Greece’s 14 regional airports under Fraport management handled 1.67 million arrivals in April, a 2.8 percent increase over the same month a year ago. In the first four months of the year, traffic through the 14 airports increased by 7.3 percent to 3.7 million passengers compared to 3.5 million in January-April 2023 (see table above).
