As part of efforts to facilitate and accelerate the registration of ocean going vessels, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis unveiled a new online shipping registry during the opening of the international Posidonia 2024 shipping exhibition held at the Athens Metropolitan Expo Center. Following registration on the “niologio.gov.gr” portal, ocean-going vessels will automictically receive a nationality certificate which includes a unique QR code enabling instant verification by authorities worldwide. Also attending the inaugural event were Greek Shipping Minister Christos Stylianidis, Deputy Digital Governance Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis, and Union of Greek Shipowners President Melina Travlou, who accepted the first nationality certificate granted to the first vessel that registered. Greek officials expect the registry, which aims to cut red tape and simplify registration procedures, to help attract more ships to the Greek registry and to further strengthen the competitiveness of the Greek flag. We will continue with the same determination to complete the digitization and simplification of other ministry processes. To make the Greek flag even more attractive. To keep Greek ocean shipping and the Greek flag flying high,” said Stylianides. On her part, Travlou said that registry marked a new era and enables the Greek shipping sector to address modern challenges. “I hope to see the Greek flag flying on more of our ships soon,” she said. Greece’s shipping fleet remains a global leader in terms of size and number of active companies.
