UK residents planning their vacation in the upcoming months have placed Greece high on their wish lists rating the country as the best-value destination (94 percent), according to this year’s Holiday Spending Report 2024 released by Post Office Travel Money.
In view of the widely held concerns about costs in overseas resorts and cities, Post Office asked holidaymakers to assess 28 international destinations for value – whether good or bad. “From this it
became clear that perceptions differ significantly between Britons who had actually visited a destination and those who based their opinions solely on what they had read or heard,” according to the report’s analysts.
In the case of Greece, 94 percent of past visitors rated the country “good value”, while the score drops to 85 percent for those with no experience of the country but believe it offers value for money.
In second place in terms of value, Spain (93 percent), and in third Portugal (92 percent). Long-haul holiday options included Thailand (89 percent) and Mexico (87 percent), which topped the list. Lagging behind are Switzerland and Scandinavia.

The study, conducted on some 2,000 adults in the UK who have visited 28 international destinations, found that the majority are planning a holiday in 2024 despite the rising cost of living.
More specifically, the number of Britons planning trips abroad this year has increased for the fourth consecutive year from 57 percent a year ago to 61 percent now, while the percentage of families planning overseas trips is at 68 percent over 66 percent in 2023.
UK: Traditional source market for Greece
The UK has been a traditional source market for Greece for decades. According to an INSETE study, 70 percent of British holidaymakers had already started planning earlier with Greece among their Top 5 choices. Data also revealed that 51 percent is planning to spend more on their holidays this year.
Indicative of the impact, UK travelers generated some 3.307,8 million euros in Greece last year.
Key takeaways
Other key takeaways of the Post Office Travel Money report include:
– three in five people and 68 percent of families plan to travel abroad this year
– city breaks remain the most popular type of holiday overall for more than two-in-five (42 per cent) Britons
– holiday overspending is at record levels with 67 percent of holidaymakers saying they went over budget on their last trip abroad by an average of 154.62 pounds.
The report’s analysts note that paying extra for food and drinks in all-inclusive packages has more than quadrupled in the last decade.
