The Municipality of Alexandroupolis, northeastern Greece, recently launched a new network of electric bicycles available at various locations throughout the city, promoting sustainable transportation practices among its citizens.

According to local authorities, the pilot implementation of this new network is funded by the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) and includes the supply and installation of 45 electric bicycles designed for public use. The project also features seven automated bicycle rental stations, 48 electronic bicycle insurance points, and the necessary software for controlling and invoicing the system.

The use of these bicycles will help reduce car traffic in Alexandroupolis, promote alternative public transport options, ease traffic congestion, and decrease environmental pollution and noise, officials stated.

Residents and visitors of the city interested in renting one of the bicycles are advised to download the Bike Alexandroupoli App to make their reservations online. The bicycles can be picked up and returned only at one of the seven rental and automatic charging stations, which are equipped with locking and charging spots.

The bicycle stations are located at the following sites:

– 288 Dimokratias Avenue

– Municipal parking lot near the “Fotis Kosmas” stadium

– Alexandroupolis Citizens’ Service Center, National Resistance 106

– Municipal swimming pool

– Intersection of Herodotus and Th. Georgiadis streets (Zisi camp)

– Nea Chili (opposite the stadium)

– Maistro (central square)

“Cycling will provide an alternative way of transport for tourists, allowing them to familiarize themselves with the city and its local attractions,” the municipality said in an announcement.
