The Municipality of Athens announced this week that it had secured 115 million euros in funding for the construction of a 38,500-seat football stadium for the Panathinaikos sports club in the western Athens suburb of Votanikos. The funding, approved by the Environment and Energy Ministry and included in the 2021-2025 development program, paves the way for the construction of the highly anticipated stadium, one of the largest urban regeneration projects in Athens. Athens Mayor Haris Doukas said the time had come to fulfil the municipality’s commitment to thousands of Panathinaikos fans and residents in Votanikos, “who will see their area upgraded”. “The approval paves the way for construction on the main part of the stadium to begin and the implementation to proceed,” Doukas added. In addition to the football fields, training facilities, and swimming pool, the project will also include parking areas, medical and rehabilitation centers, mixed-use recreational spaces, restaurants and cafes, shops, and dorms for athletes as well as a media center. The Panathinaikos football stadium is part of a long-delayed “double” urban regeneration project which in addition to the Votanikos area includes the creation of a park, a sports museum, a cafe and an underground parking space on Alexandras Avenue in Ambelokipi, central Athens, where the current Panathinaikos stadium is located.
