Source: Greek Civil Protection Ministry Firefighters battled throughout the night on three fronts as fires erupted on the islands of Kos, Chios, and in Heraklion, Crete, on Monday. Reports indicate the fires began to show signs of improvement on Tuesday morning following significant firefighting efforts. Kos A wildfire broke out in Antimachia on Kos early Monday afternoon, spreading towards the popular Kardamena area. As the flames approached dangerously close, hotels and homes in Kardamena were evacuated. Residents and tourists were transported by tourist buses to hotels in Marmari, Antimachia’s stadium, and local schools. According to reports, 102 firefighters, 13 vehicles, and 7 volunteer groups were on-site. Water drops and aerial support commenced on Tuesday morning. The Fire Department reported no damage to houses or hotels so far. Chios On Monday morning, a fire ignited in Sidirounda on Chios and continues to burn. The Fire Department reported a decrease in intensity in the mountainous area, with no homes currently under threat. Firefighters are addressing scattered outbreaks. A total of 177 firefighters, 36 vehicles, and 11 volunteer groups are engaged in firefighting efforts. Water drops and aerial support commenced with the first light of day. A 63-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the Chios fire. Heraklion In the early hours of Tuesday, a fire broke out in the Geraki area of the Municipality of Minoa Pediados in Heraklion, Crete. The Fire Department reported no immediate threat to villages. On-site efforts include 75 firefighters, 24 vehicles, two volunteer groups, and aerial support. Meanwhile, another fire started in the village of Katofygi, prompting precautionary evacuation orders. Firefighters, supported by a group of 13 vehicles and one volunteer group of 36 people, are on-site. Over 50 fires in the last 24 hours According to the Fire Department, 52 fires erupted in various parts of Greece in the past 24 hours, including Distomo in Viotia, Zakynthos, and Agios Elissaios in Laconia.
