Yiannis Sbokos, the founder of Greek hospitality group Phāea Resorts, passed away peacefully late yesterday afternoon, July 1, at the age of 75.

From his early career, Yiannis was dedicated to the tourism industry, with a strong focus on quality service and the continuous enhancement of infrastructure. He envisioned a tourism sector grounded in respect for the environment, society, and people, and he succeeded in creating one of the most significant hotel companies on Crete.

Yiannis was a founding member of the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE) and an active member of the Hellenic Hoteliers Federation. He participated in several important initiatives, including Minoan Lines, Hellenic Seaways, Forthnet, and AirGreece, all of which contributed to the overall advancement of tourism in Greece. Additionally, he served the local government with dedication and vision, holding positions such as Deputy Mayor of Heraklion, President of DEVAH, and Municipal Councillor.

Yiannis is survived by his beloved wife, Eleni Kaparounaki, his life partner since high school. He is also survived by his two daughters, Agapi and Kostanza Sbokou, and his four grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 4, at 12:00 noon at the Agios Minas church in Heraklion.

In lieu of wreaths, the family requests that donations be made (AlphaBank IBAN: GR5301409600960002002000519 / Holder: IKVKK / In memory of Ioannis Sbokos) to support the University General Hospital of Heraklion and the General Hospital of Agios Nikolaos.

We, at GTP, extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends and the people of Phāea.
