Greek taxi drivers are reacting to a new Tourism Ministry draft bill and have announced a 24-hour strike starting at 6am on Thursday.

The taxi drivers are protesting legislative changes in the new draft bill that they say affect their profession. More specifically, an amendment in the draft bill aims to crack down on violations by drivers providing tourist services. The amendment is included in the draft bill titled “Strengthening Tourist Infrastructure and Education” and is expected to be voted on in parliament on Thursday.

According to SATA, the taxi drivers union, the amendment is designed to benefit large companies.

“The government shows in every way its willingness to expropriate our profession by supporting oligopolies and multinationals in every way,” SATA said in an announcement.

A protest rally has been announced to be held at the corner of Spyrou Patsi and Kavalas avenues in Athens at 9:30am. The strike will end at 6am on Friday.
