The Greek Shipping Ministry has begun the process to restore the port of Volos in Thessaly, severely damaged by storms Daniel and Elias in September 2023.

The two major storms brought a significant amount of debris into the port’s docking area, making it very difficult for ships to enter and dock.

A contract to restore the port’s docking area was signed on Wednesday between Greek Maritime Affairs and Island Policy Minister Christos Stylianides, and Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF) Executive Director Panagiotis Stampoulidis, who also heads the fund’s Project Preparation Facility (PPF).

According to an announcement, the PPF will soon commence the tendering process to select a contractor for the project. Additionally, it will oversee the maturation, execution of the tender process, and monitor the contract on behalf of the Ministry of Shipping and Insular Policy.

“The purpose of the project is to make the port of Volos fully operational and restore its significant role in the region’s port infrastructure, ensuring it remains a vital asset for the country,” the ministry said.

The project, under a budget of 9,942,254.93 euros (including VAT), will be directly managed by the Ministry of Shipping and Insular Policy, the General Maritime and Port Secretariat and the PPF.

Funding will be provided through the ministry’s allocated budget by the 2021-2025 National Development Program.
