Photo source: Time Out The island of Karpathos in the Dodecanese is once again included among the 24 most underrated travel destinations in the world, according to a list released earlier this month by Time Out magazine. With overtourism becoming a rising issue for many popular destinations around the globe, the magazine’s network of expert editors and globetrotting travel writers compiled a list of the world’s most overlooked travel spots, offering some great alternatives to the classics. Karpathos, with its tranquil environment and beautiful beaches, stands out on Time Out’s list, ranking 14th. “Greeks in the know take the four-hour ferry ride from Rhodes to the tiny Dodecanese Island of Karpathos,” Grace Beard, editor of the magazine, suggests readers. “Do the same and you’ll find yourself chilling on a string of near-deserted beaches lapped by pristine waters and frequented by Mediterranean monk seals,” she adds. Visitors can taste the local cuisine in the taverns of Olympos, a mountain village that feels frozen in time, where women still wear colorful traditional outfits and donkeys are the only traffic in the streets. Filandia in Colombia is the world’s most underrated destination based on the list offering colorful architecture, countryside views and innovative restaurants. Time Out’s list also includes the destinations of Southern Tunisia; São Sebastião, Brazil; Côn Đảo, Vietnam; Prince Edward Island, Canada; Newcastle, Australia; Brown Station, Antarctica; Mongolia and others. Time Out magazine is part of Time Out Group, a global media and hospitality business launched in 1968 in London. In relevant news, the Municipality of Karpathos is boosting efforts to promote the alternative tourism offerings of the island to international markets. According to a recent announcement, the municipality is placing special focus on the markets of the US, Great Britain, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Austria and Norway.
