Photo © Amanda Blackard/ Travel + Leisure Milos in the Cyclades was highlighted as one of the best islands to visit in the world and claimed the top spot as the most favorite European island, according to readers who voted in Travel + Leisure’s annual “World’s Best Awards” survey for 2024. T+L had previously invited readers to participate in its survey and share their opinions on travel experiences worldwide. Feedback was provided for hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. The list of the world’s 25 best islands was compiled based on criteria such as natural attractions and beaches, activities and sights, restaurants and food, people and friendliness, and overall value. Describing the island’s unique beauty, Susmita Baral, editor of T+L, praises Milos’ “dramatic rock formations like Sarakiniko Beach, which boasts a moon-like landscape thanks to its volcanic pumice formations.” Beyond its landscape, the small Cycladic island is a perfect destination for adventure seekers, featuring a unique geological environment with submarine caves and sea tunnels. “This Cycladic Isle is also rich in history, with ancient ruins like the Catacombs of Milos and the Ancient Theater of Milos,” Baral added. Milos is the most favorite island in Europe Milos, Greece. Rising from ninth place last year, Milos soared to the top spot, becoming the “Most Favorite Island in Europe”. Readers were impressed by its “pristine beaches, whitewashed architecture, and unbelievable tavernas.” While these features are similar to those of other Greek islands, Milos stands out due to its smaller crowds compared to places like Santorini and Mykonos. “Milos was beautiful and much less crowded,” one voter wrote. “The food was great, and there were plenty of things to see and do. Everyone was very friendly, and we loved it.” Local gastronomy also contributed significantly to the island’s popularity, with readers praising its superb food. “Hands down the best island in the Cyclades,” readers agreed. Crete, Corfu, the Ionian Islands, and Paros joined Milos as some of the best destinations in the world and Europe. Over 186,000 T+L readers completed the 2024 survey, voting for the best hotels in Europe, Greece and the world.
