Photo source: TRAN Committee New Democracy (ND) MEP Elissavet Vozemberg-Vrionidi was elected Chair of the European Parliament Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN). SYRIZA MEP Elena Koundoura was elected Vice-Chair on the same committee. MEPs elected the Chair and four Vice-Chairs of the Transport and Tourism committee for a two-and-a-half year period on Tuesday during a constitutive meeting. Elissavet Vozemberg-Vrionidi (EPP, GR) was elected by 33 votes in favour (secret electronic vote), obtaining absolute majority of the votes cast. “Transport and tourism policies are at the core of European project and a cornerstone of our way of living. I am sure that together we will be able to achieve great results for both, our citizens and businesses,” Vozemberg said following her election. The new bureau of the Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) consists of the following MEPs: – Chair: Elissavet Vozemberg-Vrionidi (EPP, GR). – 1st Vice-Chair: Virginijus Sinkevičius (Greens, LT) – 2nd Vice-Chair: Sophia Kircher (EPP, AT) – 3rd Vice-Chair: Elena Kountoura (Left, GR) – 4th Vice-Chair: Matteo Ricci (S&D, IT) The work of European Parliament committees revolves around drawing up, amending, and voting on legislative proposals and own-initiative reports, as well as holding debates with Council and Commission representatives, hearings with external experts, and organising fact-finding missions. TRAN is responsible for matters relating to the development of a common policy for rail, road, inland waterway, maritime and air transport, postal services and tourism. This is costing workers in the Tourist sector a lot off money, over the season it will cost them at least 30 days lost wages, this is unfair they have maybe six months to earn enough money to keep them for a year. Surely these workers should be exempt from the enforced day off, on holiday this year we noticed taverna’s closing for a day, as they had no staff to cover, it’s really a silly law, which is also causing less tax revenue for the Government.
