According to the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA), these improvements are part of a broader initiative to support the increasing influx of tourists and bolster the airport’s strategic significance. In 2023, Karpathos Airport welcomed 268,146 travelers. George Saounatsos, Governor of the Hellenic Aviation Service Provider (HASP), which operates in conjunction with the HCAA, recently inspected an ongoing project to upgrade the lighting in the aircraft parking area at Karpathos Airport. “The National Airport on Karpathos is of strategic importance for the development of our frontier island,” Saounatsos said during his visit. Additional upgrades to Karpathos airport Further projects aimed at improving airport operations are set to commence shortly. These include the maintenance of automatic doors and the replacement of the air conditioning system. Two additional projects—expanding the aircraft parking area and constructing a new perimeter fence—are currently in the bidding stage. These initiatives, with a combined budget of €6,850,000, will be funded by the 2021-2025 National Development Plan. “HASP is committed to ongoing upgrades to ensure the airport can accommodate the growing number of tourists visiting this destination of rare natural beauty,” Saounatsos added. During his visit, Saounatsos met with key stakeholders, including Airport General Manager Christos Vasiliades, Mayor Michail Fellouzis, Prefect of Karpathos-Kassos Kalliopi Nikolaidou, and officers from the Greek Air Force unit stationed on the island. Discussions included the possibility of stationing an Air Force military doctor at the National Airport during peak traffic hours.
