The Rhodes Medieval Festival, held on Rhodes in the Dodecanese, has been honored with the EFFE 2024-2025 certification for the fourth time. The recognition acknowledges the festival’s commitment to preserving the island’s culture and its sustainable practices.

The EFFE (Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe) label is Europe’s quality stamp for exceptional arts festivals that demonstrate a commitment to the arts, community engagement, and international openness. Currently, over 1,550 festivals across the region have received the EFFE label.

The Rhodes Medieval Festival has also been awarded the EFFE label for the periods 2015-2016, 2017-2018, and 2019-2020, underscoring its consistent adherence to the high standards required for this prestigious recognition.

Promoting Rhodes medieval history

Since 2006, the Rhodes Medieval Festival, organized annually by the “Medieval Rose” association, has been a cultural event inspired by the island’s medieval history. It re-enacts everyday life and legendary events from that era. The festival takes place in the old town of Rhodes, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The island’s medieval history began in 1309 when the Knights Hospitaller, a military order established during the Crusades, took control of Rhodes, which had been part of the Byzantine Empire.

The festival’s primary goal is to connect local communities and visitors with the island’s cultural heritage, blending knowledge with entertainment. The association organizes battle reenactments and parades, a medieval market, musical and theatrical performances, workshops for all ages, tours, and interactive activities.

Places that had never hosted cultural activities, such as the castles of Monolithos and Kritinia and historical sites within the Medieval City, are now utilized for the needs of the festival.

“Through the festival, the local community becomes aware of its historical heritage, takes pride in it, and appreciates its value, while also promoting the island’s historical monuments,” organizers said.

Over the years, renowned Greek and international artists have participated, underscoring the significance of the Rhodes Medieval Festival and attracting a diverse audience.

Additionally, the festival has been recognized for its ecological profile, being listed among the 30 most “green festivals” in Europe due to its adoption of sustainable, environmentally-friendly practices.
