Photo © Goulielmos Antoniou/ Transport Ministry The Athens Urban Transport Organization (OASA) has made significant progress in upgrading the bus fleet in Athens and Attica, following the completion of an international tender for the concession of 63 suburban bus routes. The routes will be serviced by 211 new buses, with 130 already delivered to the contracting consortium and the remaining expected to arrive in the coming months. Starting in East Attica, the new buses will gradually phase out the older models, beginning at the end of August. “Beginning with 30 new buses at the end of August, all 211 are expected to be in circulation within the next 8 months,” said Greek Minister for Infrastructure and Transportation Christos Staikouras during a visit to the new bus depot of the consortium in Koropi. Photo © Goulielmos Antoniou/ Transport Ministry According to Staikouras, the addition of 211 new buses in East and West Attica, along with the 250 new electric buses already operating in Athens and Thessaloniki, will greatly enhance the quality of life for public transport passengers. Staikouras, accompanied by Deputy Minister for Transportation Vassilis Economou and OASA CEO Giorgos Spiliopoulos, emphasized that all new buses are accessible to people with mobility limitations. Goal to replace all buses by 2027 On his part, Deputy Minister Economou highlighted that the goal is to replace all buses in suburban Attica by 2027. “So everyone will have the public transport they truly deserve,” he said. Gradually starting from the end of August, these buses will operate on 25 lines in East Attica, replacing the old vehicles currently in use. The new buses will serve the following destinations: Peania, Koropi, Pallni, Pikermi, Gerakas, Rafina, Spata, Loutsa (Artemida), Anavyssos, Palea Fokea, Anthousa, Glyka Nera, Marathonas, Nea Makri,Vari, Varkiza, Saronida, Vouliagmeni. West Attica suburban bus routes The gradual acquisition of 115 new buses for service on 38 bus routes in West Attica has begun, with 34 already delivered. The new buses will serve the following destinations: Elefsina, Aspropyrgos, Mandra, Magoula, Fyli. “With the support of the government, we continue to add new, modern buses to our fleet while successfully reducing our environmental footprint,” said OASA CEO Giorgos Spiliopoulos.
