Following the opening of a new hall for departing passengers in July, the National Airport on the Greek island of Chios is continuing with additional upgrades to its facilities and operations.

According to the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA), the airport’s upgrade works have a budget of 25,667,000 euros.

George Saounatsos, Governor of the Hellenic Aviation Service Provider (HASP), which operates in conjunction with the HCAA, visited the airport to oversee the progress of the works.

The following projects are currently underway at the National Airport on the island of Chios:

– Upgrading of the airplane maneuvering areas, including the extension of the landing strip by 288 meters, for a total of 1,799 meters.
– Renovation of the arrivals building and its connection with the new departures facility, marking the third and final project concerning the airport passenger areas, to be concluded by late 2024.
– Renovation of the airport’s control tower.

“Chios’ airport Omiros is being modernized with its building facilities extended by 600 square meters and the installation of new electromechanical equipment,” Saounatsos said.

In 2023, Chios airport served more than 270,000 passengers with almost zero traffic from abroad. HCAA data for 2024 indicate an increase in passenger traffic for the current year.

The airport on Chios is named “Omiros,” dedicated to the renowned ancient Greek poet, Homer.
