Greece’s unique culinary traditions, which blend rich flavors with warm Greek hospitality, starred in a tribute published in the recent issue of the German travel magazine “Der Feinschmecker”.

Alexander Oetker, editor of the magazine, and Markus Bessler, photographer, visited Greece last April as guests of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) to explore the cuisine of Athens, Aegina, Crete, Kefalonia, and Santorini.

The trip organized by the GNTO’s branch in Germany aimed to create an extensive feature promoting Greek gastronomy to the German audience.

Entitled “Dream Destinations: Athens, Crete, and Santorini: The Best Hotels and Restaurants for Pleasure Trips in the Blue,” the tribute starts with the gastronomy scene of the Greek capital before expanding to the culinary delights of the mentioned Greek islands.

“Der Feinschmecker” magazine covers attractive travel destinations worldwide, new culinary trends, and the hotel industry. According to the Greek tourism board, the magazine is regarded as one of the top publications in its sector in the German market, boasting a monthly audience of 640,000 readers.

Alexader Oetker embarks on his tour of the capital in the first part of the special feature “The Miracle of Athens,” where he describes the city’s unique urban landscape.

“In post-crisis Greece, optimism prevails,” Oetker writes. “In the vibrant capital, chefs with international experience offer modern tavern cuisine, innovative menus, and authentic hospitality.”

While gastronomy is just one aspect of the city’s offerings, the editor and his photographer capture the essence of areas around the Acropolis, such as Plaka and Monastiraki, before portraying a more diverse city teeming with visitors from various nationalities.

The report gives special mention to Athens’ Central Market, highlighting its vibrant colors and delightful aromas.

The magazine also features new restaurants in the city center, the southern suburbs, and various hotels. The owner-chefs shared with the editor the uniqueness of Greek cuisine, which relies on fresh Greek products, the vivid imagination of cooks, and meraki—a term that describes the special passion and effort an individual puts into their creations.

Following Athens, the 25-page feature “sails” to Aegina, Crete, Kefalonia, and Santorini, introducing readers to their delicious recipes.

Dubbed “Greek Islands: Happiness at Sea—The Numerous Islands are the Gems of the Country,” the second part of the report showcases the “truly charming” Aegina in the Saronic Gulf, emphasizing its proximity to the Greek capital and its rich history, represented by the Aphaia Ancient Temple.

Kefalonia is described as a “natural paradise”, maintaining its authenticity and offering exceptional experiences in both its mountains and beaches.

Crete is lauded for its “great diversity”, blending traditional character with popularity, and boasting an incomparable cuisine, while Santorini is regarded as “a place of special importance”, offering stunning vistas within its unique natural landscape, despite its bustling nature.

The report concludes by comparing the prices of Greek restaurants with those in Europe, noting that prices in Greece are lower.

In related news, the GNTO has boosted its efforts to promote Greece to international markets showcasing Evros, Evia, Cyclades, and other Greek destinations through press trips and new collaborations.
