The second phase of the Patras-Pyrgos Motorway, a key segment of the ElefsinaKorinthosPatrasPyrgos National Road, will be funded by Greece’s National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF), as announced by Greek Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation Christos Staikouras and Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance Nikos Papathanasis.

The budget for this phase, amounting to 152,281,732.49 euros, will be provided by the “Transportation 2021 – 2027” NSRF program. This follows the funding and completion of the first phase, which had a budget of 99,828,465.86 euros and was supported under the 2014-2020 Program Period.

The Patras – Pyrgos motorway spans 74.8 kilometers. The new section will involve widening the existing 13 kilometers of the motorway, while the remaining 61.8 kilometers will require the construction of a new road.

Minister Staikouras stated that the motorway is expected to be 75 percent complete by the end of this year.

“We are committed to delivering a modern and safe motorway to all our citizens by 2025,” he said, during the announcement of the additional budget allocation.

Deputy Minister Papathanasis also emphasized that the project is adhering to its established timeline for both the construction and opening of the road.

He noted that the NSRF is funded by the European Union, stating, “We continue to deliver on our promises, ensuring that not a single euro of the available financial resources is wasted.”

The new motorway will feature two driving lanes in each direction, emergency lanes, and necessary exit and entry lanes. A central safety lane will separate the two directions of traffic, with safety barriers on both sides. Additionally, there will be designated parking areas at specific locations, equipped with the required entrance and exit infrastructure.

Upon completion, the project will enhance the transportation network in the prefectures of Ilia and Achaia in western Peloponnese, and will contribute to the economic development of western Greece as a whole.

The project will specifically include:

– Construction of the Patras-Pyrgos Motorway, extending 74.8 kilometers.
– Development of eight exit and entrance points at Mintilogliou, BI.PE., K. Achaia, Varda, Kyllini, Gastouni, Amaliada, and Pyrgos.
Upgrades to the parallel and vertical road network.
– Various support projects, including rainwater drainage, signage, security measures, area enclosures where needed, and both large and small technical works such as bridges, overpasses, underpasses, and retaining walls. Environmental works will also be included.

The budget for the second phase will cover expenses such as land acquisition, archaeological surveys and excavations when required, relocation of public infrastructure networks, and payments to expert advisors.
