Photo source: Intrakat Fraport Greece on Tuesday announced the commencement of the third phase of runway construction works at nine regional airports across Greece. According to the airport operator, the upgrades are part of an extensive enhancement project for the regional airports under its management. Following the completion of the second phase, Fraport Greece will now advance to the third phase of runway reconstruction at the following airports: Zakynthos (ZTH), Kavala (KVA), Kefallonia (EFL), Corfu (CFU), Mykonos (JMK), Santorini (JTR), Samos (SMI), Rhodes (RHO), and Mitiline (MJT). Detailed suspension dates for runway operations at each airport are provided in the table below: During the suspension periods, emergency helicopter flights will continue as needed, including ambulance services, search and rescue operations, firefighting, humanitarian missions, government, and other national flights. All other airport services within the terminals will remain available to the public. The runway reconstruction works involve comprehensive upgrades aimed at further improving safety standards. This includes significant modifications to Runway Strips and Runway Safety Areas (RESA). According to Fraport Greece, the projects, conducted under the terms of the concession agreement with the Greek state, are committed to sustainable practices and environmental respect. “Fraport Greece prioritizes sustainable development and social responsibility throughout the project,” the airport operator said in an announcement. However, the planned intervals represent the shortest feasible duration for the runway closures. With regulatory compliance and safety as top priorities for Fraport Greece, the announced works are part of a broader plan to enhance the safety and functionality of the 14 regional airports managed by the company, funded in part by the Recovery and Resilience Fund.
