Fraport Reports 1.2 Million Passenger Increase at Greek Airports in January-July

Passenger traffic at the 14 Greek regional airports managed by Fraport Greece surged in the first seven months of the year. According to the company’s data, over 19 million passengers passed through the 14 Greek regional airports under its management.

Specifically, the number of passengers reached 19.11 million, marking a 6.4 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023, when 17.95 million passengers were recorded. This represents an increase of approximately 1.2 million passengers.

The busiest airport was Thessaloniki’s “Macedonia”, with 4.07 million passengers and a 5.2 percent increase. Rhodes Airport follows with 3.62 million passengers, and Corfu Airport ranks third with 2.25 million. Chania Airport is fourth with 2.11 million passengers, and Kos Airport is fifth with 1.55 million passengers.

The airports with the lowest traffic were Kavala with 153,786 passengers, Samos with 267,023 passengers, and Mytilini with 315,040 passengers.

The most significant increases in passenger traffic were observed at Mytilini with 15.6 percent, Rhodes with 12.3 percent, and Zakynthos with 7.1 percent. The only airports experiencing a decrease in passengers were Kavala, with a 4.9 percent decline, and Mykonos, with a 2.1 percent decrease.

During the first seven months of 2024, the 14 Fraport Greece-run airports handled a total of 149.126 flights, representing a 4.5 percent increase from the previous year.

July performance

In July alone, passenger traffic increased by 3.8 percent compared to the same month last year, with 6.41 million passengers recorded. Rhodes airport led in traffic with 1.23 million passengers, followed by Corfu with 894,000 and Thessaloniki with 817,000.

The airports with the lowest traffic in July were Kavala with 55,000 passengers, Mytilini with 83,000, and Samos with 89,000.

The largest increases in passenger traffic in July were seen at Mytilini with 17.9 percent, Rhodes with 13 percent, and Chania with 6.4 percent. Conversely, decreases were noted at Kavala with a 13.2 percent drop, Mykonos with a 4.2 percent decrease, and Thessaloniki with a 0.7 percent decline.

During July, the 14 Fraport Greece-run airports handled a total of 46.933 flights, representing a 0.9 percent increase from the previous year.

Leading markets

Among the countries contributing the highest combined passenger traffic at the 14 Fraport Greece airports in July, the UK remained the top contributor with 1.31 million passengers. Germany is second with 769,589 passengers, Italy is third with 636,027, Poland is fourth with 370,199, and the Netherlands is fifth with 221,553 passengers.

France, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Sweden complete the top ten.

In terms of flights, the UK leads with 7,965, followed by Germany with 5,007, Italy with 4,333, Poland with 2,036, and France with 1,674.

Among non-European countries, notable flight traffic came from the United Arab Emirates with 116 flights, Qatar with 38, and Armenia with 28.
