Athens Mayor Haris Doukas described the announcement as a “historic day” for the city, highlighting that the license was granted in just eight months due to the effective coordination of all involved services and agencies. “This was a commitment to Panathinaikos fans and to the residents of Votanikos, who will benefit from the area’s upgrade,” Mayor Doukas stated. The project includes the development of a large park in Eleonas, near the new stadium, enhancing Athens’ green spaces. A key requirement met was obtaining a license for the demolition of Panathinaikos’ old stadium, located near central Athens. This demolition license is valid for 20 years and will be activated only after the new stadium is completed, including facilities for Panathinaikos’ nonprofessional team. Another crucial development is securing nearly 7 million euros in additional funding for the preparation of the stadium’s foundation. The total project funding, previously approved by the Greek Environment and Energy Ministry, amounts to 115 million euros and is included in the 2021-2025 development program.
