The European Commission on Tuesday proposed an aid package of 101.5 million euros for Greece to address the aftermath of the floods caused by Storm Daniel in September, particularly impacting the Greek region of Thessaly.

This aid will be provided through the EU Solidarity Fund (EUSF) and is part of a broader support initiative totaling over 1 billion euros, which also includes funding for Italy, Slovenia, Austria, and France to address severe flooding in 2023.

Previously, Greece received an advance payment of 25.3 million euros from the EUSF in January.

According to the Commission’s announcement, the allocation of the aid package is as follows: 378.8 million euros for Italy to address flood damages in the Emilia-Romagna region from May 2023, and an additional 67.8 million euros for Tuscany following floods in October and November 2023; 428.4 million euros for Slovenia; 5.2 million euros for Austria for August 2023 floods; 101.5 million euros for Greece for September 2023 floods; and 46.7 million euros for France for flood damages in the Hauts-de-France region in November 2023.

“The EU Solidarity Fund is a dedicated instrument to support Member States to recover after devastating natural disasters of major proportions, to stand in solidarity with those impacted,” Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms Elisa Ferreira said. “This aid not only provides relief and assistance for emergency costs, but also helps EU countries to better rebuild in the context of the challenges posed by climate change.”

The funding proposal will be disbursed to the requesting countries once approved by the European Parliament and the Council, allowing for prompt and full allocation.

Since its establishment in 2002, the EUSF has mobilized over 8.6 billion euros for 130 disasters (110 natural disasters and 20 health emergencies) across 24 Member States (including the UK) and four candidate countries (Albania, Montenegro, Serbia, and Türkiye).
