The construction of a new passenger ship dock at the port of Kalymnos has been approved, marking a significant development for the local island community. With a budget of 11,945,000 euros, the project is funded by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy through the National Strategic Reference Framework (ESPA) and the “Transportation Infrastructures 2021-2027” program. It has received approval from Greek Minister of Maritime Affairs Christos Stylianides and General Secretary of Maritime and Ports Evangelos Kyriazopoulos. The two officials have endorsed the contract between the Kalymnos Municipal Harbor Office and the Regional Authority of Southern Aegean. The contract has also been approved by the Port Development Planning Commission (ESAL), indicating an expedited approval process. New dock paves the way for cruise ships to Kalymnos The new dock has been in the planning stages for nearly 15 years. Its approval addresses critical issues regarding the safe docking of large vessels and will enable cruise ships to include this Dodecanese island as a port of call. Additionally, the project will alleviate congestion at existing docks and, combined with planned landscaping improvements, will enhance the urban development of the port area. Moreover, during a recent visit to the island in late August, Greek Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Stefanos Gikas informed the mayor of Kalymnos and other local officials that the ministry will soon proceed with the tender for the removal of the Blue Shark shipwreck. This has been a long-standing request from the island’s residents.
