The Municipality of Corinth in the Peloponnese is exploring ways to develop a scuba diving park in an aim to attract more visitors to the city.
For this reason it recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Dimopraktos, the Intermunicipal Development Company, regarding the possibility.
The memorandum, which in fact entails a feasibility study for the development of such a park, includes a number of features, among which the planning of an execution framework for the planning of the park, including the consideration of legal obligations and limitations and the pivotal parameters for its planning, such as the natural and sea environment, the human factor in the area, the existing infrastructures, etc.
The necessary technical, managerial and environmental infrastructures or auxiliary facilities necessary for the smooth and safe operation of a scuba diving park will be researched, especially in connection with available resources.
The compatibility of such a park with existing or alternative planned activities, such as shipping routes, fishing farms or port docks, will be studied. The feasibility study will also focus on distances of the possible park from sea side archaeological sites, as demanded by Greek law.
People who enjoy scuba diving are considered high spending tourists, since their hobby usually entails additional spending equal to 50 percent of the average tourist budget.
