Photo source: Region of the Ionian Islands The Region of the Ionian Islands is advancing plans to establish a twinning arrangement with Shandong Province in China, aiming to further strengthen bilateral relations. In this context, Ionian Islands Governor Giannis Trepeklis recently met with Xiao Junzheng, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Greece, on the island of Corfu. During their meeting, they discussed the expansion of bilateral relations between China and Greece, focusing on areas such as tourism, the economy, and cultural exchanges. Governor Trepeklis highlighted the potential for the Ionian Islands to attract Chinese tourists who are interested in not only the natural beauty of the region but also its culture, history, and heritage. He expressed the view that the Ionian Islands could become a premier destination for Chinese visitors. Photo source: Region of the Ionian Islands The Governor also noted the historical cooperation between the Municipality of Corfu and the Chinese city of Tai An, as well as the successful participation of Greek representatives in the International Tourist Fair in Shanghai. Additionally, he mentioned ongoing interest in collaboration between the Ionian University and Chinese academic institutions and highlighted Corfu’s Museum of Asian Art, one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Photo source: Region of the Ionian Islands In response, Ambassador Xiao Junzheng conveyed Shandong Province’s enthusiasm for a twinning agreement with the Ionian Islands, which Governor Trepeklis accepted with enthusiasm. Both officials agreed to work together on this initiative. Ambassador Xiao assured that he would make every effort to ensure the Ionian Islands are prominently represented at major tourism fairs in China, including the Shanghai Exports-Imports Fair, one of the most significant events globally.
