The green transition of Greece’s ferry fleet remains a top priority for the Greek Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, which recently initiated a study to formulate a comprehensive strategy through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) schemes.

Titled “Pre-feasibility Study for Coastal Shipping Green Ferry PPP”, the initiative examines Greece’s ferry connections, with plans to begin the sustainable transition from the country’s barren lines, where commercial and passenger traffic is minimal.

Details about the project were outlined during a recent meeting led by Minister of Shipping Christos Stylianides. The preliminary study is expected to span eight months, with a budget of 280,000 euros.

“Developing an innovative Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to renew our ageing ferry fleet with ‘green’ vessels for coastal routes is a crucial step towards sustainable development and enhancing the connectivity of our island regions,” said Stylianides.

The study marks the first phase of an initiative detailed in the Sectoral Program of the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) “Transport 2021-2027″. The initial budget for the project is 80 million euros, with the potential to increase to 360 million.

The final project will be financed by the European Union, with additional backing from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

“By advancing green technology and securing the connection of underused routes, we are reaffirming our commitment to a future where Greek shipping leads in innovation and sustainability,” the minister remarked.
