Greek taxi drivers will hold a 24-hour strike starting at 5am on Monday, protesting new tax regulations recently approved by the government.

According to SATA, the new bill introduces legal amendments affecting the livelihood of taxi drivers. The strike is in response to legislation that, they argue, promotes unfair competition and monopolistic practices.

The association also protests against the mandatory switch to electric vehicles for all new taxis in Athens and Thessaloniki by 2026. Additionally, from 2030 onwards, the sale of new cars powered by internal combustion engines will be prohibited.

“The government’s insistence on a transition to electrification by 2026 is the chronicle of a foretold death for our profession,” SATA said in a statement.

Taxi drivers are calling on the Minister of Tourism to take decisive action to resolve the ongoing challenges confronting the industry.

On Monday, SATA will hold a meeting in Peristeri to discuss the aforementioned issues. The strike is scheduled to conclude at 5am on Tuesday.
