Hosted by the Pieria Organization for Tourist Development and Promotion (POTAP), the two journalists, Bas Wanrooij and Erwin Boer, contributors to the travel site Griekenland.net and the KALA journal, explored in early September Pieria’s diverse landscapes and cultural offerings, leaving the area with high praise. They toured the region’s three municipalities: Dion-Olympos, Katerini and Pydna-Kolindros. POTAP’s manager, Vasilis Dimou, introduced the visitors to the cultural, archaeological, and natural beauty of the area, showcasing the prefecture’s significant potential as a leading tourist destination. Among the many highlights of their trip was a visit to Mount Olympus, Greece’s highest mountain, and the surrounding Mouson Plateau, renowned for its scenic hiking trails and mythological significance as the home of the nine muses. They also explored the majestic Pieria mountains and enjoyed the breathtaking paths winding through this area of unparalleled beauty. The journalists were equally impressed by Pieria’s rich historical and archaeological sites, including Dion, an ancient city with great religious significance in antiquity, the well-preserved Platamonas Castle, and the remains of ancient Pydna. In addition, they visited local monasteries and modern agricultural sites, such as wineries and the Olympus Cherries Agricultural Association, which added depth to their understanding of the region’s agricultural heritage. Part of their guided tour also included a visit to the Archaeological Park and Museum of Dion, as well as the stunning Agathoupolis wetlands, which offer a glimpse into the area’s diverse natural ecosystems. This rare blend of mountainous terrain and coastline is one of Pieria’s defining characteristics and sets it apart as a destination with wide-ranging appeal for nature lovers, history enthusiasts, and travelers seeking both adventure and relaxation. Pieria’s dedication to showcasing its unparalleled assets to the international market is part of its broader strategy to attract more visitors from the Netherlands and beyond. With this successful visit, local officials are optimistic that Pieria’s exceptional offerings will continue to garner attention on the global stage.
