With a 30 million euros investment boost nationwide, Greek thermal tourism is gearing up to enter a new era claiming international funding, according to Greek officials.

The potential of Greek thermal tourism was showcased at the event “Spa Tourism: Investment and Development Opportunities”, organized by the Hellenic-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry as part of the 88th TIF.

Panelists and chamber members emphasized the significant investment opportunities this form of tourism can unlock for Greece, highlighting the country’s advantages in becoming a leading wellness destination on the global map.

“Further strengthening of spa tourism can stimulate investment and boost employment,” said Manolis Mitakis, President of the Health Members Committee of the Hellenic-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

“To achieve this dual objective, the health and tourism committees of the Hellenic-German Chamber have been collaborating closely, beginning with the Thessaloniki International Fair.”

Greek thermal tourism is set to reach new heights by 2026, provided current investments in Greece continue to progress, highlighted Markos Danas, Vice President of the European Historic Thermal Towns Association (EHTTA).

Investments totaling 4 million euros are already underway for the construction of a spa town on Kythnos Island, with an additional 1.05 million for Kamena Vourla, and another 1.67 million allocated to a second thermal spring in the area. Danas also revealed that the investor plans to invest a total of 200 million euros in the latter project over time.

Renovations are currently underway at the spa facilities in Konitsa, Preveza, and Arta in Epirus, while a new thermal center will be built in Kavala with funding exceeding 3 million euros. Additionally, a new spa facility with a budget of 1.2 million euros is planned for the South Aegean region.

With Germany as the honored country at this year’s TIF, Greek officials expressed their intent to further collaborate with the country to exchange expertise and secure funding to enhance both thermal tourism and health tourism in Greece.

“In my recent discussions with my German counterpart, we collaborated closely on health tourism, particularly in the fields of health and wellness,” said Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis.

“Today, I am prepared to intensify efforts with the Hellenic-German Chamber to initiate new joint actions with German investors and doctors in health tourism, where Greece can assume a leading role,” he added.
