With the necessary statics and electro-mechanical studies having been concluded, Greece’s Ministry of Culture is moving forward with the renovation of the Ottoman temple Geni Tzami in the town of Edessa.

The temple has survived time almost intact, and its renovation has been regularly demanded by the local community. It is estimated that it was constructed during the 16th century.

Greece’s minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, remarked that “the renovation and highlighting of the Geni Tzami ottoman temple, meant to be used once again and the landscaping of the surrounding area based on the architectural study, as per the observations of the Central Archaeological Council (CAC), is part of the interventions by the Ministry of Culture in the capital of the Prefecture of Pella, focusing on the protection of monuments in the city, connected with the period of the Ottoman rule.”

The minister added that there is close cooperation between ministry agencies and the local authorities in Edessa for the completion of the renovation works at Geni Tzami, “so that it will be operationally included in the city’s cultural life, while also enhancing its extensive collection of monuments.”

Finally, with Edessa also well known for its waterfalls,  Minister Mendoni added that “the city combines a cultural heritage from all historic periods and a natural environment that will allow it to develop to a popular destination.”

Geni Tzami is of the most common type of ottoman temples, with a square shaped worshipping hall, an open portico which is known as “revak” in ottoman architecture, and a minaret which remains intact. The worship hall is decorated with paintings, covering all walls and extending to the dome.

The architectural and structural statics studies demand for several renovation projects concerning the building while besides other basic interventions the electro-mechanic study updates the structure with air-conditioning, fire and lightning protection systems.  Geni Tzami will also be properly lighted from the outside to highlight it as a city monument.
